Walking

There are several wonderful walks accessible from The Halfway. Two local favourites are:

The Offas Dyke Path.  The adventurous can take the full historic walk. It runs for 177 miles and follows the Welsh/English border: passing through breathtaking scenery along the way from mountainous ridges, valleys and farmland to undulating hills and pleasant woodland.  Most walkers pick up a smaller section of Offa’s Dyke path close to Monmouth and stop in for refreshment at The Halfway along the way. Some even start their walk from our front door.

The Three Castles Walk.  This Monmouthshire route is a 19 mile circular route linking the medieval castles of Grosmont, Skenfrith & White Castle. It takes the walker through an undulating landscape of wooded hillsides and hidden valleys across north east Monmouthshire. You can often do the whole walk without passing a soul: it is one of South Wales’ best kept secrets.

Monmouth

The streets of Abergavenny and Monmouth are pretty harks back to a lost era of vibrant town centres.

Shopping and tourism

The local towns are the historic market towns of Abergavenny and Monmouth.

Abergavenny, made famous in recent times for it’s Food Festival, sits 8 miles to the west of the Halfway. Mountains rise up on the edge of the town in the south east corner of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Explore castles, medieval mansions, Roman remains and ancient standing stones. The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal is on Abergavenny’s doorstep alongside the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre and Big Pit mine.

7.5 miles in the other direction is Monmouth: listed as one of the best market towns to visit by the Guardian in 2021. Monmouth is home to the only remaining fortified river bridge in Great Britain with its gate tower standing on the bridge. Stroll though Monmouth’s pretty streets for shopping, local food or to watch an event at The Savoy Theatre: reputedly the oldest working theatre site in Wales.

Castles & gardens

The Welsh Marches have more castles per square mile than any other part of Britain. White Castle is the best preserved and most imposing of the trio of Monmouthshire fortresses known as the ‘Three Castles’ – which includes Grosmont and Skenfrith. It is just 2 miles from The Halfway.

Kentchurch Court, Dewstow, High Glanau Manor and Vedw House have well known gardens. Within 1 ½ hours sits the National Botanic Garden of Wales, Dyffryn Gardens and Aberglasney Gardens.

Linda Vista Gardens in Abergavenny is a perfect spot for a picnic and can be a great detour for those walking through the Abergavenny Castle and Museum and their adjacent meadows.

White Castle

Lord Edward (later King Edward I) took possession of the Three Castles in 1254. The modifications at White Castle, his first Welsh castle, are previews of the mighty fortresses he would go on to build in north Wales.
